Give Me My $20 Already! (How to Get a Rebate)
Rebates are a big part of marketing these days. It seems you can buy almost anything and get "cash back" - from electronics, to kitchen appliances, even printer ink.
So why rebates? From a consumer standpoint, it's like taking off another discount making the price even lower of course. From a retailer's standpoint, it's a huge incentive to buy and that's all they see it as - more sales.
Back to the consumer's viewpoint for a moment. Rebates are legit. Yes, there is a catch - a big one. You must fill out the form exactly as intended or the rebate offer becomes null and void. Period. No Exceptions. No Grace Period. No 2nd chances.
Ah! 40% of consumers never get their rebate because they didn't fill out the form correctly! Almost half!
To make sure that rebates of yours gets back to you follow these guidelines:
- Know who you are dealing with. Check the company contact information, ask the BBB.
- Follow the rebate instructions EXACTLY. Fill out the form legibly, enclose required receipts, UPC codes, and such. Circle the purchase price on the receipts and make sure your request is clear and easy to process.
- Keep a copy of all paperwork associated with rebates. If you often use rebate-shopping, get a folder and label it "Rebates". Store all papers in that folder until the check comes. Jot down on your calendar when you sent the rebate in and again when it is due to arrive.
- Pay attention to your junk mailings...it may be your check. Many rebate check are meant to look like junk mail, but certainly aren't. Look for those perforated ends with the fold out check in the middle. Don't confuse your money with junk mail.
- If you need to complain, first call the rebate center which issued the actual mailing. Check your rebate form. Secondly, call the customer service of the actual product manufacturer. Thirdly, go through the retailer. If none of that works, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau.
- Rebates are a great incentive to purchase one brand over another. Just learn to be "Rebate Smart"!
